Discharge print

Really happy with how this print has turned out. Will be doing a lot of these on my finals when I get back!

Pigment printing

Pigments were this weeks focus. Really enjoyed the vibrancy and textures you could achieve with them!

Ethics

Our professional studies session this week covered the topic of ethics. We were then asked to blog about what interested us about this subject..
I find all aspects interesting but I think the main part of the session that got to me was how easily companies can change the appearance of something and how brutally they do it. I was already aware of the fact that most people we see in magazines are airbrushed or digitally altered in some way but I was not aware of how drastically some are tampered with.

The most unlikely places...

Ran over to Wilko's the other day for something and came across something unexpected. Actual nice gift ware! I've been really struggling to find cheap but stylish wrapping paper ect. this year but I think I've found my savior.

It's all so CUTE!

Libby McMullin

I really love this print by this designer/illustrator! Her work is inspired by folk art which is something that holds a lot of interest to me, from the folk stories to the lovely, faded and magical style of the drawings.

First prints

After all the prep we finally got down to some printing! We blocked off the small sample we wanted to use and started on the fabrics we had dyed.

You can only faintly see this print until I get myself into gear and put my samples into the steamer but I do have a good feeling about this one!

Screen printing cont.

After the screens were done in the exposure unit we had to use the jet wash to show the exposed lines as they were really faint at first.

Screen Printing week

I've really enjoyed this week, not just for the fact that it was something different but also because I just feel that it's something that I can be more creative with...

We started by coating our washed screens with a light sensitive emulsion.

Then popped them in the dryer cabinet for about twenty minutes.

After the emulsion had dried we got our koda traces and sellotaped them to the screen face down, so that the image would stay true to the original.

After doing this we put the screens into the exposure unit so the images would be transferred onto the coated screen.

York

Went on a spontaneous trip back to York yesterday! It was all lovely and Christmassy and I saw some pretty things. One was the carousel in Parliament Square...

And the other was a window display in Browns of York...

In the library

While doing some research in the Collezioni Trends magazine I came across this page. It doesn't really relate to anything but I simply found the layout and colours interesting and wanted to share it!

Finished koda trace

I finished my koda trace ready for my screen today. Got to admit I'm pretty happy with it! Took a long time but I think it'll be worth it when I expose my screen.

I've used koda trace pen, china graph pencil and a bit of black acrylic for the really dark areas.

Ben Venom

I've been OBSESSED with this guy lately! I absolutely adore his 'butch' embroidered blankets, the scale of his pieces is pretty impressive and I love how unusual they are.

moving on...

So, today we started the second part of this module... print. I've basically spent today starting my technical file and gathering a bit of research. Also been choosing drawings to put on my layout ready to expose my screen on Wednesday. This is my chosen layout, I'm actually surprised by how full it is! I've put some small textured bits on as they could look quite nice as a background for the larger drawings. Tomorrow will be spent starting and finishing my koda trace for Wednesday's session.

Recent weeks

I'm fully aware I've been slacking off in terms of posting pictures of my work. It's been a strange few weeks, but I'll be getting back on track in the coming projects!
For the past three weeks we have been focusing on embroidery, applique, dyeing and just generally getting to grips with new techniques. I've really enjoyed getting back to being hands on with my work.

Target markets and customers

Think we got a bit involved in analysing our target customers in professional studies...we were mostly right though in what was, essentially, judging a book by its cover. It shows how the majority of people put across their personality by what they wear and where they get it from.

Careers

The task for this really has me stumped. I have no definite idea of what I want to do. I know that Interiors is the area but there are so many different options within that!
I don't actually have a name for what i want to do so that is what is making this hard! I do remember that we had a lecture last year from a textiles designer called Sally Greaves-Lord, at the beginning of her career she basically designed conceptual interiors for Issey Miyake using a variety of things including her own fabrics.

These are just two of many of Sally's window installations. I remember her saying she had complete creative control over what she decided to place in these window displays. I like that idea.
I realise as well that this has brought me no closer to a decision.

Trade Shows 2

Printsource is another huge American trade show based in New York. It Focuses on the three main areas of surface design being fashion, gift and home.
It runs for two days, the 13th and 14th of January.
There are a lot companies that exhibit there and i have found some lovely new things:

This Designer's work is very diverse in terms of the products the prints are put on but overall there is a beautiful expressive quality to her work.
